Remembering Aaron Beck (1921 – 2021)

Cognition & Co mourns the loss of one of the most influential Psychiatrists of our time, Aaron Beck, who passed away on the 1st of November 2021 at his home in Philadelphia.

His contribution to psychology as a science has been invaluable in shaping the field as we know and understand it today. Beck was regarded as the father of cognitive therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy, and his methods will forever remain integral in the interventions used by Psychologists around the world.

Beck was a highly respected researcher and author; no psychology textbook would be complete without considering the cognitive and cognitive behavioural perspectives. Beck has been noted for publishing over 600 professional journal articles and has authored or co-authored 25 books.

Together with his daughter, Judith Beck, he founded the Beck institute for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, which provides CBT treatment and training, as well as conducts research in the field of CBT. His legacy will live on through this non-profit organisation, and the work done there will continue to better the world in which we live.

Thank you for everything you have given to our field Dr Beck; it has been an absolute pleasure to learn from your work. The world is truly a happier place because of you.

Rest in Peace.
