BPSYCH EQUIVALENT
The Bachelor of Psychology (BPsych) Equivalent is a professional capping programme designed for individuals with an academic undergraduate or honours degree in psychology. It provides a pathway to convert their academic qualification into a professional degree, enabling registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
There are two types of BPsych Equivalent programmes:
- BPsych Equivalent for Registered Counsellor (RC)
- BPsych Equivalent for Psychometrist
What is a BPsych Equivalent?
The BPsych Equivalent is a professional qualification requiring full-time study and practical training. It incorporates a 720-hour supervised practicum, during which students gain hands-on experience under the guidance of an HPCSA-registered professional with more than three years of experience.
Both BPsych Equivalent programmes mentioned above include a 720-hour supervised practicum, which is essential in assisting the Registered Counsellor or Psychometrist in developing the ethical competency to work in their respective areas. It’s crucial to note that the 720-hour practicum integral to these programmes cannot be undertaken independently or outside of university affiliation. Students must be officially enrolled in a BPsych Equivalent programme to participate in this practicum. Attempting to accumulate practicum hours privately, without enrollment in a recognized program, will not meet the standards set by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and will not fulfill any internship requirements.
Ethics is a significant component of these programmes, as graduates must pass an HPCSA national board exam and practice ethically thereafter. Successful completion of a BPsych Equivalent leads to an NQF Level 8 qualification and HPCSA registration.
Common Features of BPsych Equivalent Programmes
- Professional Nature: These are professional qualifications designed to prepare students for independent practice in the field of psychology.
- Supervised Practicum: A key requirement is the completion of a 720-hour practicum, supervised by experienced HPCSA-registered professionals at accredited practicum sites.
- Ethical Competence: Both programmes emphasize the importance of ethical sensitivity and adherence to professional guidelines.
- HPCSA Board Exam: To qualify for registration, students must pass the HPCSA national board exam relevant to their field.
