Registration:
To practice as a Psychometrist in South Africa, one must register with the HPCSA. Registration requires completing a professional qualification (BPsych Equivalent), a 720-hour supervised practicum, and passing the HPCSA national board exam.
Upon registration, psychometrists can practice independently within their scope, contributing to mental health and organizational settings across the country.
Scope of Practice:
The scope of practice for psychometrists includes:
- Administering, scoring, and interpreting psychological assessments measuring constructs.
- Designing and conducting research to develop psychological assessment instruments.
- Ensuring ethical and culturally appropriate use of psychological tests.
Psychometrists are not permitted to:
- Diagnose mental health disorders.
- Administer projective or neuropsychological tests.

Private Practice:
Psychometrists registered with the HPCSA as independent practitioners can establish private practices. These professionals can offer services in:

Studying to Be a Psychometrist:
There is currently only one educational pathway to become a psychometrist:
BPsych Equivalent Programme:
- A six-month capping programme designed for students who already have an Honours degree in Psychology, including a Psychological Assessment module at NQF Level 8.
- Once complete, graduates will need to write and pass the HPCSA board exam and register as a Psychometrist.
Practicum:
A 720-hour supervised practicum is an integral part of the BPsych and BPsych Equivalent programmes. Key details include:
- Supervision is provided by experienced HPCSA-registered professionals.
- Practicum sites must be accredited by the HPCSA or university.
